Web + Design System

ai sound
visualized.

Visual design system for the Technoscientific Practices of Music Symposium, made with AI sound frequencies and reflecting the transformations in sound creation going on with artificial intelligence.

Process

  1. Sound Analysis
I analyzed the sound frequencies generated by the AI instrument and using P5.js, transformed these frequencies into an animated visualization.
  2. Prototyping and Adaptability
I designed and tested multiple iterations to ensure the animations worked well across devices and browsers. One significant challenge was Safari on iOS, which does not support video backgrounds. To address this, I implemented a fallback solution, replacing animations with static images for these specific cases.
  3. Visual System
I developed a cohesive visual system that extended beyond the website to promotional materials for the event. This system ensured a consistent identity that worked as an animation and as a still image.
  4. Interdisciplinary Collaboration
I collaborated closely with the musician who developed the AI instrument to understand the significance of AI in the field and to hear the distinct differences in the sounds it produced. This collaboration was essential to ensuring the visualizations authentically represented the project’s essence.

Results

  • The symposium hosted seven international speakers and took place at Helsinki’s Central Library Oodi.
  • The visual identity was praised by attendees as an innovative reflection of the event’s central theme.
